44: Counter Intelligence
A Scrub Jockey is having bathroom troubles. Ok, she’s having SINK troubles. But if we’re being honest, don’t MOST people have some kind of plumbing problem in our homes? I mean, Andrew has these cute pink tiles…and the least-functional pedestal.
Meanwhile, at my place, I have the same issue as the listener — there’s CONSTANTLY water all up and around the counter. And evidently, we are not alone in this plight. It’s actually really common and (everyone please clap for me), I was right about the reason - the faucet doesn’t hang over the basin enough, so the water gets forced back.
All I did was Google this and I found very long Reddit threads about this mildly annoying thing. And since I rent, it’s not something I can really fix . My fix? Relying on my beloved bar towels from Target, which are the most absorbent and best rags ever.
Another listener called in to ask about how to get her whites whiter. This brought up the complicated question of whether or not bleach is OK. This is a hot subject — on one hand, bleach kills tons of bad stuff and it smells downright atomic. So surely it’s unsafe, right? But also…it’s actually a pretty simple chemical compound that’s been used forever. So what’s the deal?
It’s actually not that clear —this story from the Guardian says that “the evidence that using household bleach impacts directly on waterways and aquatic life is far from equivocal.” The bigger issue seems to be in the production and manufacturing, which is true of a lot of cleaning products. I’ve been using a product from Molly’s Suds that I got from Grove, which is kind of an alternative to OxyClean. And I like it!
