167: Rollin' With The Lomis

Listen, we love our Lomi countertop composters. They make kitchen cleanup so easy — and they make composting and reducing food waste the simplest choice. But now, a few years into regular use, I’ve got some concerns about their ability to last. Especially!!! When getting replacement parts is such a huge, enormous, massive pain in the ass, like it was for Andrew.

Listen to his plight regarding getting a freaking replacement fan.

Here’s another thing. Do you know about Right to Repair laws? That basically means that you should be able to repair your own devices and appliances in order to a.) reduce overall electronics and appliance waste and b.) save you money. Like, you know, when you spend $500 - $600 AMERICAN DOLLARS on a thingy that starts to stink, sputter, and stall after just a few years.

I feel like the Lomi and the need to just get the new fan at a reasonable price — not some proprietary fan that is actually just a pretty normal electronic piece — is a pretty good example of why this is important. You can learn more about this movement here.

Also, as a reminder, there are several Lomi-like countertop composters to meet other price points, so I want to make it very clear that you do NOT need to buy the exact one that we have. In fact, it’s a good idea to buy a different one!!! Because the more people buy different brands and types, the more competition, the more likely that other companies will get into the composting space. Which is neat!
